Get to know Teun
Teun Braken grew up in the Netherlands and was introduced to early music at a young age as he began playing the harpsichord at the age of 10. His formal musical education started at the Conservatoire of Utrecht in 2012, where he studied harpsichord under Siebe Henstra. During this time, he also embarked on organ studies under Reitze Smits. Upon completing his bachelor's degree, he pursued further studies at the Conservatoire of Amsterdam under the guidance of Menno van Delft, ultimately earning his master's degree in harpsichord.
In pursuit of specialization in basso continuo playing and ensemble direction, Teun left the Netherlands to study with professors Jörg-Andreas Bötticher and Tobias Lindner at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, Switzerland. Between 2018 and 2022, he obtained master's degrees in these disciplines, as well as in organ playing and early keyboard pedagogy.
Throughout his academic journey, Teun concurrently embarked on a performance career, performing on stages across Europe with esteemed ensembles such as the Dutch Bach Society, Concerto d’Amsterdam, Capriccio Barockorchester Basel, La Sfera Armoniosa, and Bachakademie Stuttgart.
In 2018, Teun co-founded the ensemble BREZZA with traverso player Pablo Gigosos and gambaplayer Marina Cabello del Castillo. The ensemble is dedicated to the performance of 18th-century chamber music.
Since 2012, Teun has also performed with friend and colleague Teun Wisse, together forming the ensemble Teun & Teun. Exploring the rich repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries for recorder and keyboard instrument. With these and other ensembles Teun has garnered acclaim and won numerous prizes at early music competitions such as the Van Wassenaer Competition in Utrecht, the Biaggio Marini competition in Neuenburg an der Donau, and the Rheinsberger Hofkapelle in Rheinsberg.
Currently, Teun holds a teaching position at the University of Music Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany), where he imparts his knowledge and skill of harpsichord and basso continuo. Additionally, he serves as an organist at the Reformed Church in Frick (Switzerland).
